With over 40 years’ experience under its belt, it’s no surprise that the seventh generation of this vehicle has been voted Best Executive Car in the UK Car of the Year Awards plus many other accolades from Auto Express, WhatCar? and AutoCar.
There is high praise for the 5 series and its interior design, driving capabilities and driver assistance technology, plus its engaging rear-wheel-drive handling and excellent performance no matter what engine you choose. Our favourite part is the sheer technology on board.

UK Car of the Year Award for Best Large Crossover – Skoda Kodiaq
So we can’t help by starting with telling you that the name ‘Kodiak’ is named after a type of Alaskan bear and as we are animal lovers this caught our interest!
It has a lot of similarities to its premium counterparts and with its practicality, enjoyable drive and smart interior, we think you will find this car incredibly good value for money.
The Kodiak gives you lots of choice too – there are four levels of trim to choose from plus you can choose between 5 and 7 seat configurations (depending on the trim you choose).

UK Car of the Year Award for Best Cabriolet – Mazda MX-5 RF
With snow in the air you must think any motoring journalist would be crazy to be out in an open topped sports car but 27 journalists took to the roads and voted the Mazda MX-5 RF the best Cabriolet in its class.
The retractable hard top and extra sound insulation boost refinement and end the old noisy days on the motorway. It is pricier than the soft top but if you are looking for all-round cabriolet that can take you from town to motorway to country, then the Mazda MX-5 RF is your best buy.
The Mazda MX-5 feels like you are in a racing car due to its low seating position. The title of TLC’s fantastic album ‘crazy, sexy, cool‘ comes to mind when we think of the MX-5 and we can see why it still is the world’s top selling two seater convertible sports car.

UK Car of the Year Awards – Best Hot Hatch – Hyundai i30 N
It’s Hyundai and its hot! The UK loves a hot hatch so we weren’t surprised when Hyundai launched one onto the market at the end of last year. Being it Hyundai’s first performance car, there wasn’t much thought that this could end up being as impressive as it actually is. Although the acquisition of Albert Biermann to lead the N-division. Biermann masterminded most of BMW’s best M cars for 20 years until Hyundai poached him in 2014.
Back to the car, the drive is uplifting, livens up the dullest of commutes and with three different settings for suspension – Normal, Sport and Sport + you will find the one that fits you best.
In our opinion the i30 N Performance is not only a great first from Hyundai’s performance division but is just pretty great in itself.

UK Car of the Year Award for Best Performance – Kia Stinger
The introduction of the Kia Stinger was a big move by the Korean manufacturer, taking a huge step forward away from its current line-up of the cee’d, Sportage and Picanto to name a few.
Kia commented: “We’re done with paddling in the shallow end,” it says, “and we’re tired of playing second fiddle to that bigger sibling brand. We’re a world-class car-making outfit. And anything that Europe can do…”
It is a saloon car in its essence but has undeniably better proportions than a normal executive saloon, long in the wheelbase and both lower and wider than most of its European rivals. With its mix of sporting and refined styling touches, we think Kia is on to a winner.
The car has an eight speed gearbox which might not be as grippy as some competitors, it makes up with being suited for longer distance driving which will be poised and engaging. Like any car in the performance range, you are going to have to accept the financial strain at the fuel pump but you will be more than made up with the excitement of the engine.
